Fat legislators give selves free gym memberships

by Ashley Phosphate

Columbia – Statehouse officials are apparently feeling the effects of the recession, as well as the effects of bulging waistlines. And what’s a powerful legislator to do when confronted with the prospect of having to pay to attend a gym like rest of us? Introduce H 4529 to give members of the SC General Assembly free access to gyms owned by the state or any local governments.

The bill would give legislators free access to any of these gyms, such as MUSC’s Wellness Center or any gym at a state funded college. While legislators have to pay for gas and other necessities during the recession like all other South Carolinians, gym memberships are apparently too costly. No cost-benefit analysis has been done on the legislation nor has legislator objected to the obvious abuse of power connotation. Governor Mark Sanford’s intentions regarding signing the bill are not known at this time, but since he saw no problem in using state money for his philandering speculation is strong that he will support the bill.

Editor’s Note: This is a real bill.
